Technical description

Starlet versions before 0.33 for Perl send a body in responses to HEAD requests, corrupting the next response on a persistent or pipelined connection. The request method is not passed to the response writer, so whatever body the application returns for a HEAD request is sent. With Plack::Middleware::Head the body is empty, but an HTTP/1.1 response without a Content-Length header still gets the chunked encoding terminator. Responses with status 204 or 304 are also sent with their body. Pipelined GET and HEAD requests keep the connection open even when keep-alive is disabled, which is the default. A client or proxy reading the connection takes the extra bytes as the start of the next response, which may desynchronize a proxy that shares the connection across clients.

——0A flaw was found in the ChunkReader component of the Undertow web server, which is used to handle chunked transfer encoding in HTTP requests. The issue occurs because a security check for the chunk size is performed before the value is shifted, allowing a specifically crafted 15-digit chunk size to bypass the limit and overflow into internal state flags. This can cause the server to terminate a request body prematurely and interpret the remaining data as a separate, smuggled request.20h

——11Echo is a Go web framework. From 4.0.0 until 4.16.1 and 5.4.1, Echo's Proxy middleware selects a raw tunnel from a client WebSocket upgrade request before verifying that the configured upstream accepted the upgrade. If the upstream rejects the upgrade with an ordinary keep-alive response, later HTTP requests on the connection are sent directly to that upstream without passing through Echo's router or route-specific middleware. This can bypass authentication or authorization enforced only by Echo routes, but requires an accessible proxy route, a cooperating rejected-upgrade response, and a target without independent upstream authorization. This issue is fixed in 4.16.1 and 5.4.1.1d

——15Inconsistent Interpretation of HTTP Requests ('HTTP Request/Response Smuggling') vulnerability in the HTTP/1.1 chunked body reader of mtrudel bandit allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to smuggle a second request past a front-end proxy via a chunk extension that contains a bare LF. The chunked reader in lib/bandit/http1/socket.ex takes the chunk-size line to be everything up to the first CRLF and discards everything after ; without checking it against the RFC 9112 chunk-ext grammar, so bare LF, bare CR and other control bytes pass. A proxy that ends the size line at a bare LF reads 2;\nxx\r\n40\r\n... as one request whose second chunk holds a GET /admin, while Bandit ends the body early and dispatches GET /admin as a separate pipelined request. Deployments without such a proxy in front of Bandit are not affected. This issue affects bandit: from 1.12.4 before 1.14.0.4d

——3Starman versions before 0.4019 for Perl send response bodies for HEAD requests, desynchronizing responses on keep-alive connections. For a HEAD request Starman omits chunked framing but still writes the body returned by the application, on both the array and streaming response paths. Responses with a 1xx, 204 or 304 status also carry the body. On a keep-alive or pipelined connection the client reads those bytes as the start of the next response. A front-end proxy that reuses upstream connections may then pair responses with the wrong requests.4d

——5Twisted is an event-based framework for internet applications, supporting Python 3.6+. Prior to 26.10.0rc1, twisted.web.http.HTTPChannel.headerReceived rejects a NUL byte in an HTTP header value but accepts a bare carriage return or bare line feed. Because Twisted splits header lines only on CRLF, a hidden Content-Length header can remain folded into another value while a lenient front end treats the bare character as a line terminator. The resulting framing disagreement can smuggle a following request past front-end access controls, poison a shared connection or cache, and expose a later client to the wrong response. This issue is an incomplete-fix residual of earlier Twisted request-smuggling protections. This issue is fixed in version 26.10.0rc1.1d
