Technical description

Untrusted Java Deserialization in Apache OpenNLP SvmDoccatModel Versions Affected:   before 3.0.0-M4 (libsvm document categorization module; introduced in   OPENNLP-1808 and only present on the 3.x line) Description: SvmDoccatModel.deserialize(InputStream) reads an attacker-controlled stream with java.io.ObjectInputStream and calls readObject() without an ObjectInputFilter installed. ObjectInputStream materialises every class referenced in the stream before the resulting object is cast to SvmDoccatModel, so the cast that follows readObject() executes only after the foreign object graph has already been deserialised in full. If a Java deserialization gadget chain is available on the consumer's classpath, a crafted payload supplied to deserialize() executes arbitrary code in the JVM that loads it. Apache OpenNLP itself does not ship a known gadget chain, so the realistic risk is to downstream applications that embed the libsvm module alongside vulnerable transitive dependencies. The method is public and static, so any caller can pass an untrusted stream to it directly. The practical impact is remote code execution against processes that load SvmDoccatModel instances from untrusted or semi-trusted origins. Mitigation: 3.x users should upgrade to 3.0.0-M4. Users who cannot upgrade immediately should treat all serialized SvmDoccatModel streams as untrusted input unless their provenance is verified, and should avoid invoking SvmDoccatModel.deserialize() on streams supplied by end users or fetched from third-party sources without integrity checks.

——14The Prime Mover – Backup and Migration plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to PHP Object Injection in all versions up to, and including, 2.2.1 via deserialization of untrusted input in the migration search-and-replace routine (recursiveUnserializeReplace()). An unauthenticated attacker can store a crafted, base64-encoded serialized object in wp_comments.comment_content through the standard comment-submission endpoint (wp-comments-post.php). When an administrator subsequently performs a routine Prime Mover export or restore, the plugin base64-decodes that stored value and passes it to unserialize() with no allowed_classes restriction. A Property-Oriented Programming (POP) chain is present in the plugin's own bundled Freemius library (FS_Clone_Manager::__set → FS_Option_Manager::set_option → store() → update_option()), so no additional plugin or theme is required — the plugin ships the gadget itself.2d

——14Hugging Face Datasets through 5.1.0 contains an insecure deserialization vulnerability that allows attackers to execute arbitrary Python code by crafting a malicious pickle file loaded through the deprecated pandas packaged builder. Attackers can supply a pickle-backed dataset that is processed by Pandas._generate_tables via pandas.read_pickle() without validation, so when a victim calls datasets.load_dataset("pandas", data_files=...), the embedded __reduce__ payload executes code with the victim process's privileges.3d

——15baserCMS is a website development framework. In versions 5.0.0 before 5.3.2 and 5.4.0 before 5.4.2, the widget-area entity serializes widgets only when the submitted value is an array, allowing a string submitted through the admin JSON API to be stored unchanged. Entity reads, including front-end rendering and API responses, deserialize the stored value with unserialize() without an allowed_classes restriction, accepting both raw and base64-encoded serialized data. An administrator, or an attacker who obtains widget-write capability through a separate vulnerability such as chained XSS, can plant an object graph that subsequently triggers on unauthenticated page requests. Two demonstrated gadget chains in the default dependency set use composer/composer ProcessExecutor::startJob() with Process::fromShellCommandline(), or logiscape/mcp-sdk-php StdioTransport::connect() with StdioServerParameters, to reach proc_open() and execute commands as the web-server user. Deserialization bypasses constructor-based readonly safeguards, and the stored payload can execute repeatedly until the database row is repaired. Unauthenticated page access is a trigger after privileged payload storage, not an unauthenticated means of initially planting the payload. This issue has been patched in versions 5.3.2 and 5.4.2.3d
